Herschel/HIFI Observations of EXtraOrdinary Sources: The Orion and Sagittarius B2 Starforming Regions

Orion KL—HIFI/PACS Line Survey

Orion KL has been the target of numerous millimeter and submillimeter line surveys from ground-based telescopes and the ISO/LWS. The surveys revealed the presence of several distinct components: an ambient component (T < 50 K), two regions of warm gas (T = 100 – 200 K; hot core and compact ridge), and a strong shock (T > 500 K), each with a distinct chemistry. The HIFI spectra will discriminate these components via their intrinsic velocity structure. We anticipate this source will, along with Sgr B2 (N), provide a template to examine the full extent of complex organic chemistry in the ISM. We plan complete scans of the HIFI bands (using DBS) and also PACS range spectroscopy in SED red and blue wavelength ranges. Edwin Bergin is the coordinator for the HIFI portion of this subprogram, with Jose Cernicharo the coordinator for PACS scans.
