Orion KL—HIFI and PACS Water Mapping
SWAS, ODIN, and ISO have found that the water emission in Orion is dominated by shocks with an extended distribution of emission. The Orion shock is a critical test case for models of shocked gas emission and we will investigate the water abundance throughout a mapped region of around a square arcminute. The results from this subprogram will aid in the interpretation of the line surveys as it provides needed information on the spatial distribution of water, which is often the dominant reservoir of oxygen. In all, this subprogram will map greater than 15 transitions of water, along with some lines of CO and OH. Observations will primarily use HIFI OTF or DBS raster scans. David Neufeld is the coordinator of this subprogram, with Jose Cernicharo the coordinator for PACS scans.
