Herschel/HIFI Observations of EXtraOrdinary Sources: The Orion and Sagittarius B2 Starforming Regions

Sgr B2(N)—HIFI/PACS Line Survey

Sgr B2(N) is one of the highest column density cores located in the Sgr B2 molecular cloud. This cloud is the most massive cloud of molecular gas located near the center of the Milky Way. Sgr B2(N) is notable as this core has the largest spectral line density at 3mm of any previous line survey, and has provided the largest number of detections of complex biologically-interesting molecules of any source in the Galaxy. The HIFI and PACS line surveys of this object will likely be a key source for detections of new molecular species. We plan complete scans of the HIFI bands (using DBS) and also ACS range spectroscopy in SED red and blue wavelength ranges. Darek Lis is the coordinator for the HIFI portion of this subprogram, with Jose Cernicharo the coordinator for PACS scans.
